๐งญ How the SIE Works ยท Lesson 1 of 4 ยท 4 min
What the SIE Is (and Isn't)
๐งญ The SIE is the front door to a securities career, and you can open it on your own: no firm, no sponsor, just $100 and a good plan.
๐ก Key idea
80 items (75 scored + 5 unscored), 1 h 45 min, score 70 to pass, $100, age 18+, no sponsor, valid 4 years. The SIE is step one, not a license by itself.
๐ง Why it matters
The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam tests basic industry knowledge. SIE is administered by FINRA; SIE Ready is not affiliated with or endorsed by FINRA. Anyone 18 or older can take it: no broker-dealer sponsorship and no US citizenship needed. The fee is $100. You get 1 hour 45 minutes for 80 multiple-choice items with four options each: 75 scored and 5 unscored pretest items you cannot tell apart (FINRA cut the pretest items from 10 to 5 on October 27, 2025). Passing is a scaled score of 70. A pass stays valid for 4 years. The SIE alone does not let you do securities business: you also pass a qualification exam such as the Series 7 and get registered through a firm. SIE + qualification exam + firm registration = registered representative.
๐ In the real world
๐ Priya, a college junior, passes the SIE in March before her summer internship. Two years later a broker-dealer hires her. Her SIE is still valid (inside 4 years), so the firm only has her take the Series 7 and files her registration. Her classmate who waited is studying for both exams at once while starting a new job.
๐ Takeaways
- 75 scored + 5 unscored items (80 total), 1 hour 45 minutes, scaled score of 70 to pass
- Age 18+, $100, no firm sponsorship or US citizenship required
- Valid 4 years; you still need a qualification exam and firm registration to do business
๐ Terms in this lesson
Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam: FINRA's entry-level exam on securities industry basics: 75 scored and 5 unscored questions (80 in all) in 1 hour 45 minutes, with a scaled 70 needed to pass.
Scaled score: A result converted to a 0โ100 scale so different versions of the exam compare fairly; 70 passes the SIE.
Pretest items: Five unscored trial questions (ten before October 27, 2025) mixed in with the scored ones and impossible to tell apart, so answer every one seriously.
Qualification exam: A representative-level exam, such as the Series 6 or 7, that together with the SIE and registration by a member firm lets someone do securities business.
SIE validity: A passing SIE result stays valid for four years.
โ Test yourself
How many items on the SIE count toward the candidate's score?
- 70 items
- 100 items
- 80 items
- 75 items
Answer: D ยท 75 items
The exam has 80 items, but 5 are unscored pretest items (since October 27, 2025; it was 10 of 85 before), so 75 count. 70 is the passing score, not an item count, and 100 is the fee in dollars.
Which statement about who may take the SIE is accurate?
- Only people who already passed Series 7
- Only employees of a FINRA member firm
- Anyone 18 or older, without a sponsor
- Only US citizens who are 21 or older
Answer: C ยท Anyone 18 or older, without a sponsor
FINRA lets anyone 18 or older self-enroll; no firm association or US citizenship is needed. The Series 7 comes after the SIE, not before, and it is the Series 7 that needs firm sponsorship.
Dan passed the SIE. What else does he need before he can sell securities to the public?
- Only a state business license
- Only a renewal of his SIE score
- A qualification exam and registration through a firm
- Nothing, because passing the SIE is itself a full license
Answer: C ยท A qualification exam and registration through a firm
Passing the SIE alone does not qualify anyone to engage in securities business. Dan needs a qualification exam such as the Series 7 and must be registered through a FINRA member firm.
