What Passing the SIE Gets You

You passed the SIE. Can you start selling stocks on Monday? Not yet, and the exam may ask why.

💡 Key idea

SIE + a representative qualification exam + registration by a member firm = registered representative. The SIE alone qualifies you for nothing.

🧠 Why it matters

Anyone 18 or older can take the SIE; no firm sponsorship is needed. Passing it shows basic industry knowledge, but it does not by itself let you do securities business. To become a registered representative you must also pass a representative-level qualification exam, such as the Series 6 or 7, and be registered through a FINRA member firm, which files your Form U4. Your SIE stays valid for four years, so the rest of the path has a window.

📈 In the real world

Priya, a college junior, passes the SIE in May. She cannot open accounts or take orders yet. After graduation a broker-dealer hires her, sponsors her Series 7 and files her U4. Her SIE, still within four years, completes the pair.

📌 Takeaways

  • SIE: 18+, no sponsorship, valid four years
  • Registration also needs a qualification exam and a member firm's U4 filing
  • Passing the SIE alone does not permit selling securities

📖 Terms in this lesson

SIE + SERIES + SPONSOR: To become a registered rep you need all three: the SIE, a representative qualification exam, and registration through a member firm.

✅ Test yourself

Which statement about someone who has just passed the SIE, and nothing else, is accurate?
  1. They may accept customer orders
  2. They are a registered representative
  3. They are not yet qualified to register
  4. They may recommend mutual funds

Answer: C · They are not yet qualified to register

Passing the SIE alone does not qualify anyone to register or do securities business. Accepting orders, being a registered representative and making recommendations all require a qualification exam and registration through a member firm.

For how long does a passing SIE result remain valid?
  1. Two years
  2. Five years
  3. For life
  4. Four years

Answer: D · Four years

An SIE pass stays valid for four years. Two years is the usual lapse period for a representative registration after leaving a firm, and the SIE does not last five years or for life.
