The Outline: Where the Points Are
๐ Almost half of your score comes from one section. Study time spread evenly across the outline is study time spent badly.
๐ก Key idea
Products & Risks 44% (33 items) and Trading & Accounts 31% (23) carry three quarters of the score; Capital Markets 16% (12) and Regulatory Framework 9% (7) finish it.
๐ง Why it matters
FINRA's content outline splits the 75 scored items into four sections. 1) Knowledge of Capital Markets: 16% (12 items). 2) Understanding Products and Their Risks: 44% (33 items). 3) Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities: 31% (23 items). 4) Overview of the Regulatory Framework: 9% (7 items). Sections 2 and 3 together are 75% of the score, so products (stocks, bonds, munis, options, funds, risks) and trading/accounts deserve most of your hours. Do not skip the small sections, though: 19 items from sections 1 and 4 can decide a close result. Mnemonic for the order and size: 'Markets, Products, Trading, Rules: 16, 44, 31, 9' (they add to 100).
๐ In the real world
๐ Marco has six weeks. He plans roughly 45% of his hours on products, 30% on trading and accounts, 15% on capital markets and 10% on the regulatory framework, and adds a full practice exam each Sunday. When his practice scores show weak options questions, he shifts time inside the products block instead of starving another section.
๐ Takeaways
- Four sections: 16% / 44% / 31% / 9% = 12 / 33 / 23 / 7 scored items
- Products and Trading/Accounts together are 75% of the exam
- Weight your study hours roughly like the outline, then adjust to weak spots
