Enrolling, Test Day and Retakes
๐๏ธ You can enroll tonight from your laptop. The bigger question is what happens if test day goes wrong, and that answer changes on January 19, 2027.
๐ก Key idea
Self-enroll with FINRA, test with Prometric (center or online), no notes, answer everything. Retake waits: 30/30/180 days now; 15/15/60 from Jan 19, 2027.
๐ง Why it matters
To self-enroll, create a FINRA account, enroll for the SIE and pay the $100 (card, ACH or voucher), then schedule with Prometric at a test center or online with a remote proctor. You may not bring reference materials. There is no penalty for guessing, so answer every item; a blank is simply wrong. If you fail, FINRA Rule 1210 sets waiting periods: today you wait 30 days after a first or second failed attempt and 180 days after a third or later failure within two years. FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-18 cuts these to 15, 15 and 60 days starting January 19, 2027, including for candidates still waiting on that date. Check the rule that applies on your own retake date.
๐ In the real world
โณ Leah fails her first attempt on November 20, 2026. Under the rule in force then, she must wait 30 days, so she rebooks for late December. Had her first failed attempt happened after January 19, 2027, the wait would have been 15 days. Either way she uses the gap to redo her weakest section.
๐ Takeaways
- Enroll yourself: FINRA account, $100 payment, then schedule with Prometric
- No reference materials; no guessing penalty, so never leave an item blank
- Retake waits 30/30/180 days today; 15/15/60 days from January 19, 2027 (Notice 26-18)
๐ Terms in this lesson
Retake waiting period: Wait 30 days after a first or second failed attempt and 180 days after a third or later; from January 19, 2027 the waits become 15, 15 and 60 days.
โ Test yourself
On November 2, 2026, a candidate fails the SIE for the first time. How long must she wait to retest?
- 60 days
- 30 days
- 180 days
- 15 days
Answer: B ยท 30 days
Under the rule in force in November 2026, the wait after a first or second failure is 30 days, so she can retest in early December. 15 days is the new first-failure wait that starts January 19, 2027; 180 days applies after a third or later failure within two years under the current rule.
What is the best strategy for an item you cannot answer with confidence?
- Answer it, because guessing is not penalized
- Skip it; unscored items cannot be identified
- Ask the proctor to clarify the wording
- Leave it blank to avoid a penalty
Answer: A ยท Answer it, because guessing is not penalized
FINRA tells candidates to attempt every item; there is no deduction for wrong answers, so a blank only costs you. You cannot tell which items are unscored pretest items, and proctors do not explain content.
Under the waiting periods that take effect January 19, 2027, how long must a candidate wait after a third failed attempt within two years?
- 180 days
- 15 days
- 30 days
- 60 days
Answer: D ยท 60 days
Regulatory Notice 26-18 cuts the waits to 15 days after the first and second failures and 60 days after the third or later. 180 days is the current rule for a third failure before that date.
