The SIE exam for college students
The SIE is one of the few FINRA exams you can take before anyone hires you, which makes it a natural fit for college. You need to be 18, you do not need a firm or US citizenship, and a pass stays valid for four years. Here is how to time it and study for it around a semester. The timing advice is ours; the rules are FINRA's.
Why students take the SIE
- No sponsor needed. The Series 7 and the other qualification exams need a member firm behind you; the SIE does not.
- It lasts. A pass is valid for four years, long enough to cover the rest of most degrees and the first job search.
- It is the shared foundation. Whatever qualification exam a future employer needs, the SIE is the other half of the registration.
- It shows initiative. On a rรฉsumรฉ, "passed the SIE" tells a recruiter you learned the basics on your own.
Be clear about the limit: passing the SIE alone does not register you, does not let you do securities business and does not put you on BrokerCheck.
When to take it
Work backwards from when you expect to be hired, and keep the four years in mind.
| If youโฆ | A sensible time to take the SIE |
|---|---|
| are recruiting for a junior-year summer internship | Fall or winter of junior year, so the result is on your rรฉsumรฉ during recruiting |
| are aiming for a full-time role after graduation | Junior year or early senior year |
| are a first-year or sophomore exploring finance | Any time after you turn 18; the pass still covers four years |
| will start a graduate program first | Count the years: the SIE must still be valid when a firm registers you |
If the four years run out before you are registered, you take the SIE again.
Cost, vouchers and where to test
The exam costs $100, paid when you enroll by card, ACH or a voucher. FINRA sells vouchers to organizations, including schools, so ask your finance department or investment club whether they hold any. Veterans who qualify for the GI Bill may be able to get the cost reimbursed.
Once enrolled you have 120 calendar days to test, and FINRA does not accept refund requests once payment is processed, so enroll when you have picked your study weeks. You can test at a Prometric center or online from a quiet room; the exam day guide covers both.
Studying around classes
The SIE has 80 items (75 scored) in 1 hour 45 minutes, across four sections. A semester-friendly approach:
- Pick a quiet stretch: winter break, the start of a semester or the weeks after midterms. Avoid finals.
- Use the six-week plan in our SIE study plans: 45 to 60 minutes a day fits around a full course load.
- Lean on your coursework. A finance or economics class already covers parts of capital markets and products; spend your extra time on customer accounts, prohibited activities and the regulatory framework, which classes rarely teach.
- Study in short daily sessions between classes rather than one long weekend session.
Study with your club or class
Finance clubs and student investment groups often prepare for the SIE together: a shared test-date target, a weekly review session on one outline section, and a group practice set. If your club or department wants a group link with progress counts (never individual answers), see SIE Ready for colleges and clubs.
โ Test yourself: 4 questions
Three quick checks on the rules that matter most to students. Exam practice only, not investment advice.
Question 1 of 4
Which statement about state registration of agents is accurate?
- States register agents only for bond transactions
- Each state registers agents under its own law
- FINRA registration automatically covers all states
- Only principals need to register with the states
Show the answer and rationale
Answer: B
States regulate agents under their own securities (blue-sky) laws, separate from FINRA registration. It applies to representatives, not just principals, and is not limited to bonds.
Question 2 of 4
Which event would require a rep to amend Form U4?
- Being sued for fraud in a securities sale
- Buying a car with a dealer loan
- Opening a new personal checking account at a bank
- Taking a three-week vacation abroad with family
Show the answer and rationale
Answer: A
Being named in investment-related civil litigation alleging fraud is a U4 disclosure event. Vacations, ordinary car loans and checking accounts are not disclosure items.
Question 3 of 4
While participating in the Maintaining Qualifications Program, a former rep must:
- Remain employed part-time by a member firm
- Complete the required CE each year
- Pass a qualification exam every three years
- Retake the SIE once every two years
Show the answer and rationale
Answer: B
MQP participants complete annual CE by December 31 to keep their qualification alive for up to five years. No re-testing or employment by a member is required.

Question 4 of 4
Which of these makes a person statutorily disqualified?
- Being fired for low sales
- A personal bankruptcy filing
- Expulsion by an SRO
- A written customer complaint
Show the answer and rationale
Answer: C
Being expelled or barred by a self-regulatory organization is a statutory disqualification. Bankruptcies and complaints are disclosed on U4 but are not disqualifying, and a sales-related firing is not either.

โ Frequently asked
Can college students take the SIE?
Yes. Anyone 18 or older can take it, with no firm sponsor and no degree requirement.
When should a college student take the SIE?
Our suggestion: before the recruiting season that matters most to you, often junior year, as long as the four-year validity still covers the date a firm would register you.
Does the SIE help you get an internship?
It cannot guarantee anything, but it shows a recruiter you have learned the industry basics on your own, and it leaves only the qualification exam once you are hired.
Can my school pay for the SIE?
Possibly. FINRA sells SIE vouchers to organizations, including schools, which candidates use to pay the $100 fee.
Can I take the SIE online from my dorm?
FINRA offers the SIE online. You need a private, quiet room that passes a 360-degree camera check, with nothing on the desk.
