How hard is the SIE exam?

"How hard is the SIE" is one of the most searched questions about the exam, and the honest answer starts with what is not known: FINRA does not publish an SIE pass rate on its website. What it does publish, the outline, the format and the scoring, tells you a lot about where the difficulty is.

What about the pass rate?

We could not find an SIE pass rate published by FINRA on finra.org (checked November 2026). The figures you will see quoted online come from prep companies or from conference presentations, not from a FINRA publication, so we do not repeat them here. If FINRA publishes one, we will cite it.

What matters more is how you are scored: a scaled score from 0 to 100, with 70 to pass. Because the scale is adjusted for the difficulty of each question set, "70" is not the same as answering 70% correctly, and nobody can tell you exactly how many questions you can miss.

What makes the SIE hard

  • Breadth. Four sections, from the Federal Reserve to options to anti-money laundering rules. Few people arrive knowing all of it.
  • The products section is big. 33 of the 75 scored items, across stocks, bonds, municipal securities, options, funds and risk.
  • Precise rules. Many items turn on who approves something, whether it must be in writing, and the deadline or dollar threshold that applies.
  • Question style. Four plausible choices, some "EXCEPT" or "NOT" stems, and short scenarios where two answers sound right and one is better.
  • The clock. 80 items in 105 minutes is about 78 seconds each. Comfortable if you know the material, tight if you are re-reading every stem.
  • Pretest items. Five unscored items are mixed in unidentified, and they may feel unfamiliar. Do not let one rattle you.

What makes it manageable

  • It is introductory. The SIE tests basic knowledge; the job-level depth is in the Series 7 and the other qualification exams.
  • The outline is public. FINRA lists every topic and the weight of each section, so nothing on the exam should be a complete surprise.
  • The math is light. A few simple calculations, with a calculator provided. See SIE math formulas.
  • A miss is not the end. A failing report shows how you did in each section, and the retake wait shrinks to 15 days after a first or second failed attempt from January 19, 2027 (30 days until then).

The traps worth practicing

TrapWhat to do
"All of the following EXCEPT"Turn it into four true-or-false checks and pick the false one
Two answers that both sound rightLook for the word that makes one more complete or more precise ("first", "best", "most")
Numbers that look alikeLearn the numbers in pairs: 30 vs 15 days, 50% vs 25%, $10,000 vs $5,000
Long scenariosRead the question line first, then the facts it needs
Rules that are changingKnow the date: the SIE tests the rule in force on your test day

Every one of these gets easier with practice questions that explain why the wrong answers are wrong. Reading SIE questions drills the stems.

How to tell you are ready

There is no official benchmark, so use your own data: take at least two timed, full-length practice sets at the real pace, look at your weakest section in each, and fix it before booking or keeping the date. Readiness by section in the app shows the same thing day to day. Our study plans build those timed sets into the last two weeks.

Question 1 of 4

A city issues an industrial development revenue bond to build a plant leased to a manufacturer. Whose credit mainly backs the bond?

  1. The state, through a moral pledge
  2. The federal government, through a guarantee
  3. The city, through its power to tax
  4. The manufacturer making the lease payments
Show the answer and rationale

Answer: D

Industrial development revenue bonds are repaid from the corporate user's lease payments, so the company's credit is what matters. The city does not pledge taxes, no state moral obligation is implied, and there is no federal guarantee.

Question 2 of 4

Interest on bonds issued by U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico or Guam is notable because it is generally what?

  1. Exempt only for residents of the territory
  2. Subject to AMT regardless of its purpose
  3. Taxable federally but exempt in all states
  4. Exempt from federal tax and from every state's tax
Show the answer and rationale

Answer: D

Territory bonds are generally exempt from federal tax and from state and local tax in every state, not just for residents. They are not federally taxable, and AMT exposure depends on whether a bond is a private activity bond.

Question 3 of 4

What is the typical maturity of a municipal anticipation note?

  1. No stated maturity at all
  2. Usually 10 to 30 years
  3. Usually one year or less
  4. Usually exactly 270 days
Show the answer and rationale

Answer: C

Anticipation notes are short-term financing, typically a year or less, repaid when the expected money arrives. Ten to 30 years describes bonds, 270 days is a commercial paper benchmark, and notes do have maturities.

Question 4 of 4

Which portion of a nonqualified withdrawal from a 529 plan is subject to income tax?

  1. Nothing, if held over five years
  2. Only the earnings portion
  3. Only the contribution portion
  4. The entire withdrawal amount
Show the answer and rationale

Answer: B

Contributions were made with after-tax dollars, so only earnings are taxed, plus generally a 10% additional tax. There is no five-year holding exemption for nonqualified withdrawals.

โ“ Frequently asked

What is the SIE pass rate?

FINRA does not publish an SIE pass rate on finra.org as far as we could find (November 2026). Figures quoted online come from prep companies or conference presentations.

Is the SIE hard to pass?

It is broad rather than deep: four sections and many products and rules, tested with close answer choices. With a few weeks of steady study and practice questions, it is very passable.

How many questions can you miss on the SIE?

Nobody can say exactly. The passing score is a scaled 70, adjusted for the difficulty of the question set, not a fixed number of correct answers.

Is the SIE harder than the Series 7?

No. The Series 7 is longer (125 items, 3 hours 45 minutes), has a higher passing score (72) and goes deeper.

What happens if I fail the SIE?

You get a report with your overall score and section performance, and you wait before retaking: 30 days after a first or second failure until January 18, 2027, then 15 days.
